چکیده

Spontaneous transition to superrotation in warm climates simulated by CAM3" (2010). [1] Recent paleoclimate proxy reconstructions show that tropical surface temperatures may have been as high as 35°–40°C in the Early Cenozoic. Here, we study the tropical atmospheric circulation's response to temperatures in this range using a full‐complexity atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). We find that when equatorial surface temperatures exceed ∼33°C, the model undergoes a transition to equatorial superrotation, a state with strong annual‐ and zonal‐mean westerlies on the equator. The transition is driven by zonal momentum convergence due to large‐amplitude transient eddies on the equator. These eddies have a structure similar to the observed Madden‐ Julian Oscillation (MJO). The model's MJO variability is weaker than observed when simulating the modern climate but increases sharply with temperature, coming to dominate the tropical variability and mean state of the warmest climates.

Convective Generation of Equatorial Superrotation in Planetary Atmospheres

In rapidly rotating planetary atmospheres that are heated from below, equatorial superrotation can occur through convective generation of equatorial Rossby waves. If the heating from below is sufficiently strong that convection penetrates into the upper troposphere, then the convection generates equatorial Rossby waves, which can induce the equatorward angular momentum transport necessary for s...

Abrupt Transition to Strong Superrotation Driven by Equatorial Wave Resonance in an Idealized GCM

Persistent superrotation is seen in the atmospheres of other terrestrial bodies (Venus, Titan) but not in that of present Earth, which is distinguished by equatorial easterlies. Nevertheless, superrotation has appeared in numerical simulations of Earth’s atmosphere, from two-layer models to multilevel comprehensive GCMs. Simulations of warm climates that generate enhanced tropical convective va...

Energy Conservation using Daylight Energy Transfer through Windows : Case of Office Buildings

The exterior envelope of buildings play a significant role on the amount of energy consumption in office buildings that are located in warm climates. The present study focuses on the reduction of energy consumption by integrating daylight and artificial lights, and by changing the characteristics of exterior envelope of buildings including window coverage and dimension of buildings. Moreover, t...

The Dynamical Simulation of the Community Atmosphere Model Version 3 (CAM3)

The dynamical simulation of the latest version of the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM3) is examined, including the seasonal variation of its mean state and its interannual variability. An ensemble of integrations forced with observed monthly varying sea surface temperatures and sea ice concentrations is compared to coexisting observations. The most significant differences from the previous vers...

Sensitivity of the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum climate to cloud properties.

The Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a significant global warming event in the Earth's history (approx. 55 Ma). The cause for this warming event has been linked to increases in greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide and methane. This rapid warming took place in the presence of the existing Early Eocene warm climate. Given that projected business-as-usual levels of atmospheric...
